ANZAC DAY
In the last week, ANZAC Day was celebrated with great reverence on both campuses. A big thank you to those staff and students who lead the services. We were also joined this week by Mr “Digger” Brooks and his ANZAC trailer. Students from Pre-Primary to Year 10 were able to hear his stories and visit the trailer filled with all sorts of memorabilia.
Ms Waters and I were joined at the Northam Dawn Service on ANZAC Day by many Primary and Secondary Student Leaders. It was wonderful to have such representation at the local service.
Staff Training Day
Last Friday, all teachers and education assistants took part in Day 1 of four days of training spread over the next two years. The training is in the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) and is an approach that looks at education through a Trauma-Informed Positive Education (TIPE) lens that links:
- Approaches addressed in trauma –informed classrooms (healing), with
- Proven positive psychological interventions (growth)
Day 1 focused on the domain of Body – which prioritises the body and the impacts of chronic stress on the body and its ability to self-regulate. Learning and school can be stressful for students in many ways and repeated stress can take a considerable toll on a child’s ability to learn. Many of our students arrive at school quite stressed before the school day has even begun. The day had a focus on determining whether students are ready to learn and how to manage if they are not, how to help students regulate their stress levels through brain breaks and other de-escalation techniques.
The school was fortunate to receive federal funding for this training program and we are grateful for the opportunity. We are looking forward to day 2 in September.
Leonard Day
Congratulations to the following students who were the recipients of this year’s Leonard House Day Awards. Each of these students was recognised for the way in which they share their gifts and talents with their peers and the wider school community, just as Sister Leonard did while she was a member of staff for 34 years.

Dear Families & Friends,
Last week, we met as a Primary school around the flagpole to pay our respects to those who work for peace in the world, past and present. Our Year 6 leaders led us in prayer and we took a moment to remember the sacrifices made by our service men and women during this Anzac Day liturgy. We continue to pray for those who are suffering the effects of war and conflict in the world.
The Year 5 classes headed to Kings Park on Friday to participate in activities at the War Memorial and to learn about the soldiers who are memorialised there. Students also investigated special plants and how they survive as part of their Science lessons. We look forward to hearing more about this next week.
Last week, staff participated in a day of professional learning in the Berry Street Education Model and your child might start talking about new routines happening in the classroom such as Welcome Circles and Ready to Learn scales. These are specific routines designed to ensure all students feel safe, welcomed and ready to focus on their studies. The implementation of the model will continue all year and into 2025. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask your child’s teacher or myself.
God moments:
- Reflecting with our Year 6 Student Leaders as they laid a wreath during the Anzac Day dawn service
- Watching Year 3 and Pre-Primary students welcome a new friend into their classrooms
- Enjoying the visit from Graham Brookes with his trailer of war memorabilia
- Spending the afternoon doing yoga with my Quest Club group on Thursday
- Closely observing some large moths after the rain with Year 4 students
- Celebrating Leonard House Day with a sea of red at the combined Assembly and during lunchtime stalls

Class in Focus: Year Two Blue
WOW! How are we already at the end of Week 3?
We have achieved so much in such a short time in Year 2 Blue. We have hit the ground running in preparation for a busy yet exciting term ahead.
In Literacy this term, we are looking at information texts, specifically delving into the structure and coherence of our writing. In our Talk for Writing unit, we are studying information texts through the exploration of 'Life in the Olden Days'. Students have had the opportunity to play ‘old-school’ games, have a go at what school was like in the past (sitting in rows, walking in two straight lines, etc) and learnt about what type of punishment happened. This has tied in extremely well with our HASS unit.
To start HASS off for the term we have investigated the importance of ANZAC day and why it is such a significant date in Australian History. We then delved into Past and Present and how times have changed over the years. Some students couldn’t believe what life was like in the olden days. In the coming weeks, we will continue talking about Past and Present and how significantly life has changed over the years.
So far in Numeracy this term, we have looked at place value to the thousands, skip counted by 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s, and explored a variety of addition and subtraction number problems. Numeracy is a lot of fun in Year 2. We get to use lots of different tools to help us out.
Every Friday afternoon we have the opportunity to spend the last two periods with high school students doing inquiry work. There are several different activities with open ended tasks for students to explore. This allows children to develop a range of learning and thinking skills and to interact verbally and non-verbally with others. Activities include using materials to build a bridge strong enough to hold various items, creating an imaginative pet using Lego and describing their creation to a peer, directed drawings, threading, reading and much more. We love having the high school students come for a visit. It teaches our children to interact with others with care, empathy and respect and allows our students to feel, safe, secure and supported.
I am looking forward to seeing the students in Year 2 Blue shine throughout Term 2 and the remainder of the Year.
Kayla Hyde, Tara Ryall & Louise Crees
Two Blue Team
Class in Focus: Pre-Primary Gold
The Pre-Primary Gold class has had a big start to Term 2.
We had some new members join our class: Goldy, Rainbow Pinky, Ruby and Rosie have been a very exciting addition. Through inquiry, the students have explored “what fish need to survive?”. This has helped students to care for our new class members. Students are now starting to inquire about an animal of their choice.
This term we have introduced ‘Inquiry’ into our timetable. Through inquiry, students develop strategies for critical and creative thinking to develop their abilities to ask questions, problem solve and reflect on their own learning. Inquiry incorporates many different learning areas such as Science, HASS, Design & Technology, English and Mathematics. To help us with some harder questions within our inquiry unit, the Year 5s have been coming on a Thursday afternoon to help us. We love having them join us and support us in our research to build on our knowledge.
As we continue our inquiry, we can’t wait to see the exciting new learning experiences Pre-primary Gold uncover.
We have been building our Mathematics and Literacy skills through the play-based provocations around our room. In Literacy we have been learning how to decode CVC words and working on our letter formation, while in Mathematics we have started to explore patterns and use bondblocks.
We look forward to an exciting term ahead in Pre-Primary Gold.
Beth Ciallella and Stephanie Richardson
Pre-Primary Gold Team
Last week on the Secondary Campus we shared a beautiful ANZAC Day liturgy thanks to our Year 9 Students, their HASS teachers and the amazing Mr Reidy. The students maintained reverence throughout the liturgy and were moved by the ANZAC story.
Thank you to the student leaders and the teachers who helped provide a wonderful Leonard Day yesterday. There was a lovely vibe throughout the day with some great stalls provided.
The Mindflight Incursion for the Year 9s started on Friday afternoon, where the first half of the cohort engaged in a Virtual Reality Careers incursion. The second half will have the opportunity to do this next Friday. If you are interested in having a look at what the Mindflight incursion teaches, please go to https://www.mindflight7.com.au/. It is a fascinating concept where students are able to immerse themselves in experiences of real-life careers.
Thank you to the students, parents and guardians who attended the Parent Teacher Interviews on Thursday evening. It is so important to be able to be able to work together for student success. If you were unable to attend or missed out on an appointment, please email the teacher you wished to see and arrange a phone interview that suits you both. The first Monday of Term 3, 15 July, will be a pupil free day with whole school parent teacher interviews running all day.
Coming up in Week 4
Our Year 8s have been baking and getting ready to spoil their mothers for our Mother’s Day morning tea next Wednesday 8 May. If you are a parent or carer of a Year 8 you should have received your email invitation to this event. Please remember to ring or email us your RSVP by the end of the day Monday 6 May to reserve your seat at the table.
St Joseph’s will be hosting the Combined University presentation night next Thursday night, 9 May, from 6:00pm – 7:00pm on the Secondary Campus. We invite you to an information session with representatives from the WA universities for anyone interested in applying for tertiary education. If you have questions about choosing courses, application processes, entry pathways, support services or what to expect at university – come along! They will start with a general presentation with information relevant to all institutions, followed by an opportunity for Q&A and individual questions. No RSVP required.
Year 12 General students begin their Externally Set Tasks on Monday. These are done in their usual class time and are only 50mins in length. It is important that they undertake these assessments so please try to ensure that attendance at school next week is regular.
Please see below the Year 12 EST timetable for Week 4 and 5.

Year 9 Digital Technologies
In Year 9, students explore electronics and programming by working with Arduinos, versatile microcontroller platforms. Through structured projects and challenges, they acquire foundational knowledge of circuitry and coding, developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the process. Students design and construct circuits, write and debug code and create projects that respond to input and environmental cues.
Working with Arduinos encourages creativity and innovation as students investigate the potential of integrating hardware and software. This practical experience equips them for further studies in STEM disciplines and cultivates an interest in technology and engineering.
Year 10 Digital Technologies
In Year 10, students study 3D printing and 3D model making, focusing on additive manufacturing and design processes. Through structured projects, they gain practical experience with 3D modelling software, design principles and the operation of 3D printers.
Students learn to create and modify digital models, prepare files for printing and address common printing issues. This curriculum emphasises precision, attention to detail and problem-solving skills, as students work to produce tangible objects from their digital designs. Engaging with 3D printing technology prepares students for further studies in design and engineering and introduces them to the practical applications of digital fabrication.

FlexiTrack High
On Tuesday 23 April, seven Year 12 Students attended the ‘FlexiTrack High Uni Taster Day’ held at Murdoch University. The FlexiTrack High Program is designed to help students develop the skills needed to succeed at university. Murdoch University works with participating secondary schools to provide a structured and supportive learning experience for students seeking an alternative option to the ATAR pathways into university over 35 weeks of Year 12.
On the day, students were able to take part in classes of subjects that they were interested in studying at university and also had the opportunity to see all the facilities that the University has to offer them in the future.
Secondary da Vinci Club
Our Secondary da Vinci Club has returned and is back in the swing of things with our first rotation for the year. Students in our program can select whether they would like to develop further knowledge and skills in Biology or Chemistry for a period of four weeks. The da Vinci Club also welcomed some fresh additions, with around ten students accepting the challenge of an invitation to develop their academic gifts and talents further
In the Biology rotation with Dr Bundock, the students are learning about DNA and extracting DNA and will be conducting further analysis of samples they have gathered.
In Chemistry, the students are doing a range of reactions, including looking at maximising gas production and using real-world situations and applying chemistry to solve them.
Prior to commencing the rotations, the students who entered the Astrophotography competition received feedback and prizes for the winners. Overall, there were some excellent submissions. With further imaging runs later this year with the UWA Spirit telescopes once again, all the students will have the opportunity to enhance their skills and understanding on how to schedule and create colour composite images using Photoshop.
The top three images for this round were led by Lisa de Beer with her image of NGC 2070, also known as the Tarantula nebula. She demonstrated very skillful layering of the individual red, blue, green and Hydrogen alpha images to create a stunning final shot.
Second place went to Aliza John, who also developed an image of the same celestial object and third place to Roslin Tony who imaged NGC 3372, or the Carina nebula. For their efforts each of the students received a range of prizes, including a book, hot beverage mug, space pins, pencil sharpener and NASA pencils. Well done, girls! And all the best to our students for the next few weeks of scientific explorations.

Sleep
School-aged children need 10 -11 hours sleep a night. Getting a good night’s sleep will help your child to be more settled, happy and ready for school, and will strengthen his or her immune system.
Here are some sleep tips:
- Have a bedtime routine – this will help your child wind down from the day.
- Keep the bedroom dark, cool and quiet - this will help your child drift off easily.
- If anxieties or worries are keeping your child from relaxing, acknowledge the feelings and deal with it straight away or plan to sort the issue out in the morning after a good night’s sleep.
Remember, medication is not the answer to children’s sleep problems.
Sleep – tips for teenagers
Teenagers need about 9 -10 hours of sleep a night. Lack of regular sleep is likely to affect academic and sporting performance, and behaviour. The risk of emotional problems, such as depression, may also increase in teenagers who regularly do not get enough sleep. Even getting an extra 30 minutes of sleep each night will make a difference.
The typical teenage brain wants to go to bed late and sleep late the following morning, which is usually hard to manage. You may be able to adjust your body clock but it takes time. Suggestions include:
- Choose a relaxing bedtime routine; for example, have a bath and a hot milky drink before bed.
- Avoid loud music, homework, computer games or any other activity that gets your mind racing for about an hour before bedtime.
- Keep your room dark at night. The brain’s sleep–wake cycle is largely set by light received through the eyes. Try to avoid watching television right before bed. In the morning, expose your eyes to lots of light to help wake up your brain.
- Do the same bedtime routine every night for at least four weeks to make your brain associate this routine with going to sleep.
- Start your bedtime routine a little earlier than usual (for example, 10 minutes) after four weeks. Do this for one week.
- Add an extra 10 minutes every week until you have reached your desired bedtime.
- Avoid staying up late on the weekends. Late nights will undo your hard work.
- Remember that even 30 minutes of extra sleep each night on a regular basis makes a big difference. However, it may take about six weeks of getting extra sleep before you feel the benefits.
Should you require further information about sleep, contact your local Community Health Nurse, Aimee Leeson on 0400 182 654, or go to http://raisingchildren.net.au
