From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of St Joseph's Community
ANZAC DAY
In the last week, ANZAC Day was celebrated with great reverence on both campuses. A big thank you to those staff and students who lead the services. We were also joined this week by Mr “Digger” Brooks and his ANZAC trailer. Students from Pre-Primary to Year 10 were able to hear his stories and visit the trailer filled with all sorts of memorabilia.
Ms Waters and I were joined at the Northam Dawn Service on ANZAC Day by many Primary and Secondary Student Leaders. It was wonderful to have such representation at the local service.
Staff Training Day
Last Friday, all teachers and education assistants took part in Day 1 of four days of training spread over the next two years. The training is in the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) and is an approach that looks at education through a Trauma-Informed Positive Education (TIPE) lens that links:
- Approaches addressed in trauma –informed classrooms (healing), with
- Proven positive psychological interventions (growth)
Day 1 focused on the domain of Body – which prioritises the body and the impacts of chronic stress on the body and its ability to self-regulate. Learning and school can be stressful for students in many ways and repeated stress can take a considerable toll on a child’s ability to learn. Many of our students arrive at school quite stressed before the school day has even begun. The day had a focus on determining whether students are ready to learn and how to manage if they are not, how to help students regulate their stress levels through brain breaks and other de-escalation techniques.
The school was fortunate to receive federal funding for this training program and we are grateful for the opportunity. We are looking forward to day 2 in September.
Leonard Day
Congratulations to the following students who were the recipients of this year’s Leonard House Day Awards. Each of these students was recognised for the way in which they share their gifts and talents with their peers and the wider school community, just as Sister Leonard did while she was a member of staff for 34 years.
