West Coast Fever Cup:
On Thursday 15 May, 115 students attended the WCF Netball Carnival at the REC Centre. All students participated well, represented the school proudly and encouraged their peers on. Thank you to all the team helpers, parents, umpires, coaches and volunteers who made the day possible! Our Year 10 girls came away with a grand final win and the Year 11/12 girls runner ups! The lower school Year 7 and 8 teams finished 2nd and 3rd on the ladder respectively. The mixed boys teams from Year 7-10 showed some talent and the Year 9/10 girls and 11/12 boys fought hard all day. Well done everyone!
ACC Cross Country:
Twenty-two students attended the ACC Cross Country and tried their hardest in chilly, windy conditions. All students were an asset to the school. Special mention to Brayden Sibley who was our fastest runner, coming 57th out of hundreds of competitors in the Under 19 age group.
Year 11/12 Lake Leschenaultia Outdoor Ed Camp:
On May 15 and 16, the Year 11 and Year 12 Outdoor Education General Students participated in a mountain biking expedition. They left bright and early from Clackline and rode along the Kep Track for approximately 40km before making camp at Lake Leschenaultia. The ride was not without its challenges and a couple of students needed some first aid for some scrapes and bruises, but these students soldiered on gallantly. The evening involved cooking food on camp stoves and sleeping in tents, all of which needed to be packed in their backpacks. The meals varied in quality and complexity from 2-minute noodles to steak sandwiches. The following day the students broke camp and continued their journey, hoping to finish at Bellevue. The ride had to be cut short at John Forrest National Park due to a few factors, but credit to the students in how they represented themselves and the school. Special mention should go to the Year 12's who led the expedition and showed excellent leadership skills.
Year 10 Sport Science Fitness Testing:
The Year 10 Sport Science class have been learning about the components of fitness and how to measure their fitness levels. They completed a variety of fitness tests and have now created a circuit to help improve their fitness levels.
Year 9 & 10 Outdoor Ed:
The Year 9 Outdoor Ed class have been learning about orienteering by competing in an orienteering course at school, as well as travelling to the Avonwell Scout site to search for controls and work on their map skills. They are also beginning to learn how to use a compass to find bearings and locate controls. Well done to the winning team of Xavier Ross, Toby Della and Ben Gorman who found the most controls in our class competition. The Year 10 Outdoor Ed class have continued with mountain biking this term. They have been venturing further up the Kep track and enjoyed riding down some large hills and navigating rocks and gravel on the way down.
Year 9/10 Sport and Rec:
Students have been planning and coaching AFL lessons with their peers as participants. It's been a big learning curve organising engaging warm-ups, skill practices and drills, and students have shown great leadership and skill as beginner coaches. Well done!
Athletics in PE:
All Year 7-10 students have begun Athletics in PE for the next 6 weeks. They will be jumping, throwing and running in preparation for the Interhouse Athletics carnival in week 3 next term. Students are competing in class competitions to aim for gold, silver and bronze points for their efforts in these events in-class. Pre-carnival events such as 400m, 800m and 1500m will be completed prior to the carnival.
Keys for Life ISP:
All Year 10 students have been participating in Keys for Life during ISP time in Term 2. The students have been learning road safety awareness, road rules and how to give way at intersections. They are working hard towards passing their theory test to get their L plates when they turn 16! Keep up the excellent work!
AFL ISP:
On Wednesday 18 June, a team of our Year 8 and 9 students competed in the Eagles School Boys Cup. They played against Northam SHS and a combined team from York, Quairading and Beverley at Henry Street Oval. Our boys have been training hard during Friday's ISP time with their coach, Cameron Watson. We congratulate them for their effort both in the lead up and on the day!
Netball ISP:
On Fridays over 30 students have regularly participated in the netball ISP. Students freely share the positions including umpiring and scoring. This week we will see a clash of the sexes with a special competition of boys verse girls with chocolates going to the winning team.
Year 11 & 12 Aviation Excursion
The Year 11 & 12 Certificate III Aviation students were involved in an education tour of the WA Aviation Heritage Museum in Bull Creek this week. The aim of the excursion was for the students to gain a greater understanding of the historical components of aviation history.
In addition to the general tour, the students looked in depth at aspects of aviation linked to WWII and the modern era. The students heard many stories about the impact aviation during wartime, peacekeeping and various other operations relating to Australian aircraft and personnel such as the Avro Lancaster and C-47 Dakota. Post-WW2 the students looked at the roles played by the General Electric Canberra, de Havilland Vampire and Bell Iroquois, better known as Huey during periods of time such as the Vietnam war era and through training and support during a period of National service.
The students got to view many exhibits, check out jet engines and cockpits, including those of the FA-18 Hornet and Tornado fighter jets. Overall, a tremendous experience that sparked much discussion and one where the students not only gained a direct insight into specific aircraft, but developed a greater awareness of events Australia has had a vital role in internationally over the last eighty years.
