Dear Lord,
We ask you to bless St Joseph's School Community.
We pray that you guide us to be just and to see,
listen, speak and act like St Joseph.
May we be inspired by our Founders to be the best
that we can be.
May we always keep Jesus at the centre of all we do.
St Emilie Pray for us
St Marcellin Pray for us
St Joseph Pray for us
And may we always remember to pray for one another.
AMEN
Dear Members of St Joseph's Community
This week we said goodbye to our old white school bus which has served us faithfully for over a decade. We took delivery of our smaller, new bus which will be used for small group and local bus runs.
Our Year 12s returned today from their three-day Retreat which was a culmination of all the Retreats they’ve taken part in during their time at St Joseph’s. As a group they were outstanding in the way in which they immersed themselves into the experience.
Founders' Week next week is going to be a highlight of the school year. With a myriad of activities planned throughout the week, our hope is that Founders’ Week becomes something that students look forward to each year. The timetable for the week can be found on our school website at the following link:
https://sjsnortham.wa.edu.au/class-information
We look forward to sharing many photos on our School Facebook page during the week.

Parish Sacramental Program
The Parish Sacramental Program Coordinator, Mrs Kathy Pollard, wishes to advise families that the Parish is considering holding the Commitment Ceremony for each Sacrament prior to or at the first parent/student workshop. If you have any queries regarding the Sacramental Program, please contact Kathy on 0429 685 632.
Dear Families & Friends,
Thank you to everyone for supporting our LifeLink Crazy Sock Day. Students and staff had a colourful range of socks on display, and we raised $368.85 for a very worthy organisation. Thank you to Year 4 Gold for this fabulous photo.
School Photos went smoothly this week and some beautiful shots were taken. Thank you to our Year 6 Student Leaders for assisting the photographers on the day. If you have not yet placed your order, photos can be purchased online through the Fotomakers website.
Last week, we installed some new additions to the Early Childhood Playground. When asked for design ideas, the Pre-Primary students requested everything from a full water park with curly slides, through to a horse area (with real horses). We settled on a boat and a new cubby house. Over the coming weeks, we will be extending the sandpit with fresh white sand and will be looking to make further improvements in the new year.
May you all have a lovely week ahead.

Year 3 Police Station Excursion
On Wednesday 14 June, 60 Year 3 students, 6 parents, and one honorary Year 3 student took a long hike down to Northam Police Station. After having lunch at the park, we gathered outside the station and met Sergeant Holly and Sergeant Shane, who inducted all the students as Junior Recruits.
Once we entered the working police station, the Sergeants gave the students a talk about rules, laws, choices, and consequences, which we had been learning about in Humanities for the entire term. We also had an important discussion about our safety network and how to recognise warning signs when we are not feeling safe.
We were divided into two groups: Year 3 Gold, who went to check out the CCTV network, and Year 3 Blue, who were "fingerprinted" and placed into a temporary holding cell. Afterwards, we went outside to explore a police van, where we saw the lights, sirens, and the pod at the back.
Finally, the students had the opportunity to see some of the equipment the police officers use, accompanied by a fantastic explanation of how the Police are here to keep the community safe. The students had plenty of excellent questions about police work, living in communities, and the consequences that people may face if they break rules and laws. Here's a fun fact: carrying more than 50 kilograms of potatoes is actually breaking the law!
A special thanks goes to our parent helpers: Jess, Kate, Carrol, Nat, Charles, and Annette, as well as to Sergeant Holly and Sergeant Shane. We had a fantastic time, and learned a lot!

Class in Focus: Year 2 Gold
In Term 1 our class went on an excursion to Brownes Dairy. This connected beautifully to what we were learning in Design & Technology. In class we were learning about how and where food and fibres are manufactured. During one activity, students even investigated the most popular crops and materials manufactured in Australia. At Brownes Dairy we viewed the factory floor and were lucky enough to taste some delicious yoghurt! The workers at Brownes Dairy taught us about the health benefits of dairy products, and the different processes to make milk, yoghurt, cream and sour cream. To finish our day, we all took turns to milk a dairy cow.
In Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We started by sorting 2D and 3D shapes into the correct categories. We then compared the similarities and differences between 2D and 3D shapes, by investigating the properties of 3D shapes. Our class explored what 3 dimension means by creating a variety of 3D shapes using shape nets, playdough and toothpicks, which everybody loved doing. My favourite lesson was when we made our ‘Shape Pizzas’ creating a pizza using different shapes that we had learnt about and then counted how many we used of each. Our lessons were great fun with lots of interactive activities exploring 3D shapes.
This term we also had our Mother’s Day Learning Journey, which allowed our class to show off the amazing work that we have been doing.
After the Mother’s Day Assembly, parents accompanied us back to our class where they had the option to decorate some yummy cookies, paint their Mums or Grans nails, or do a paint by numbers. Our lucky students finished off the afternoon by visiting their siblings classes and finally had a lovely picnic and play with their family at lunch.

Year 2 Blue - Congratulations Mrs Johnson!
We would like to thank Mrs Johnson for giving us a wonderful term of learning and fun, while she was completing her final teaching practicum in our class. She planned engaging activities, incuding: monster potions, designing a playground, making slime, and many more!
Thank you Mrs Johnson!
From Mrs Morris, Mrs Rodgers and Year 2 Blue
It has been a busy two weeks with Years 9 to 12 examinations running and little time for anything else on the Secondary Campus. The Year 12's took off gratefully on Wednesday for their NAHRA Retreat. I wish them all the best in getting to have some quality time together before they all branch out and go their separate ways.
School photos went very well on Tuesday. Thanks in a large part to the incredible help I received from staff and one of our Year 9 students. Thank you for your help, Henry!
We have started on our Year 11 Course Counselling for 2024 this week. Our Year 10s are coming to me very well informed of their options and, in most cases, a good idea of the career path they wish to take.
Next week will be quite confusing for some of our students as we navigate our inaugural Founders' Week. I have put together a Year-by-Year timetable for students and will put onto SEQTA to help them once I double check all is correct. Some Hail Mary’s will not go astray!
God bless and have a lovely weekend.

Semester One Examinations
All Year 9 to 12 students have now completed all examination requirements and have received their results. Viewing the score is the first part of the review process, identifying why it does not say 100% is the next part. For those who achieved a measure of success, and performed to your highest ability, enjoy the feeling, and celebrate the victories. If you did not receive what you were expecting, or possibly what is seen as an appropriate score, then going deeper to find out why, is what needs to happen next.
Analyse, be realistic and be critical. All teachers and classes will have or are about to review these important assessments, you need to examine closely the areas where you underperformed. Often these areas will be further developed throughout the year, requiring a greater depth of understanding. Sorting out any misunderstandings now is vital to this ongoing process, please do not just leave it and hope that it goes away.
If you spent time preparing notes and studying for the examinations and did not quite achieve your hopes and dreams, having a plan to attain those hopes and dreams is required, improvement will not just happen by itself. This plan could be actively reviewing key content, going back over questions, reviewing answers on past tasks, or making fresh notes on Semester One material. Remember, you need to examine and utilise what is right for you, but the key being after reflection, if you are looking for improvement you need to act.
To use a sporting analogy, for your weekend game, we all know you just don’t turn up, hope for the best, play the game and see what happens. You attend training, you listen to your coach, you review your performance in the previous game, you practice and repeat key drills, so your skills improve and performance in what really matters, the weekend game is enhanced. This may be a surprise for some, but this approach is also required for academic programs. You listen to your teacher, you review your performance in the previous task, practice and repeat questions, then performance where it counts, in the next test, or examination will also be enhanced!
For those who achieved great scores and for those who truly achieved at their personal best, well done, but there are always little opportunities to improve, search these out and aim for continued success, highlighting all your gifts and talents as we head into Semester Two content.

As part of ViSN Modern History, students do a History Cake Week. Many may remember Stephine Irvin made a fantastic cake on the topic that they were studying last relating to Germany Between the Wars. This year, students have been studying Russian History from the fall of the monarchy to the rise of the socialist government, so this year Stephanie has made a cake of Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin.
The Cake was given to staff to enjoy, noting that the eyes are in texta so best not to eat them.
Thank you Stephanie for another fantastic Modern History cake!

Year 12 NAHRA Retreat
Over 14 to 16 June, the Year 12's embarked on their NAHRA Retreat at Fairbridge Village.
The NAHRA Retreat was a deep spiritual reflection for the Year 12's and encouraged them to truly see the Results of God's Friendship in their life. Many of our 12's were overwhelmed with the incredible influence God had in their connections to others and truly appreciated the time away from school to Spiritually Discern their relationships.

Year 9 Outdoor Education Excursion
During Week 7, the Year 9 Outdoor Education students participated in a day trip to the Northam Scouts' grounds.
The students participated in team building and orienteering activities. They worked together to overcome different challenges and complete tasks to compete in an orienteering race. Each student demonstrated very good team work and leadership skills as well as the ability to overcome some difficult challenges.
Thank you to Mr Cameron Greenley for helping.
Year 10 Outdoor Education Excursion
During Week 8, the Year 10 Outdoor Education students travelled to Lake Leschenaultia to demonstrate their mountain biking and expedition skills.
The students rode around the lake to start the morning, observing lots of wildlife and demonstrated good 'leave no trace' principles. Later they enjoyed the lower half of the mountain biking trails, participated in a first aid activity and prepared lunch for each other.
Thank you to Mr Ryan Sinclair for your help, ensuring events like this can go ahead.

Did you know that the School offers a reduction in your school fees?
Families have the ability to work off a portion of their fees through voluntary help at the School. This is a great way to get involved and set a wonderful example of vollunteering for your child.
Whilst assisting in the Canteen is an obvious way to help, other activities encouraged include:
- Classroom assistance
- Reading assistance
- Officiating at swimming & athletics carnivals
- Gardening
- Running or assisting with fundraising activities
- Covering books for the Library
Forms and pamphlets are available from the Primary Office or download through the website at https://sjsnortham.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/86/parent_participation_card.pdf
Once completed, please hand in to the Business Manager, Ms Quinn, by the end of Term 3 - the forms can be dropped into either Admin Office and Ms Quinn will arrange for the deduction of the Levy from your School Fees Account.

Donations needed - Newborn clothing and toddler items
We are running a new course in Year 11 called CHILDREN, FAMILY AND THE COMMUNITY. It teaches students about the development of children from conception to age 12. As such, we will be purchasing a reality baby. Therefore I am requesting some donations of newborn clothing that anyone may be wanting to get rid of. I am also seeking baby and toddler-age toys and books that you may be wanting to donate. If you are able to help, please drop donations into the Secondary office.

The canteen continues to operate with the new WINTER MENU - please check the current menu and daily specials before ordering.
You are encouraged to please order online. If we experience connectivity issues with the online ordering, please revert to using lunch bags to place orders for that day.
Recess or snack items ordered online are available for students to collect from the Canteen at their Recess break. Milo pops and icypoles can be collected from the Canteen following the second lunch bell.
Founders' Day 23 June - Canteen Closed
Please note that on Friday 23 June the canteen will be closed. The canteen will be open as usual for the remainder of the week.
On Friday 23 June all students will receive a free sausage sizzle and drink for lunch and a cake and drink for recess. Unfortunately, students who have special dietary requirements should bring their own food for the day - drinks will be available for all students.
Canteen Support - Volunteers Required
Due to high demand on our quality food and service we need helpers to ensure that our kids get their lunches on time. In order to function to our highest potential, we ideally need 2 or more volunteers a day. Volunteering is a great way to teach your kids about giving, modelling them for the future. Also, every shift you do at our School helps you towards qualifying for a Parent Participation discount on your annual fees.
We would love to welcome you into our fun, and busy environment and see the smiles on your children’s faces when they see you in their school. If you are able help, please sign up online at the new sign up link - https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/99628346012/false#/invitation

During Terms 2 and 3, students are required to wear their winter uniform.
Families wishing to access the Uniform Shop are advised that the online shop is the preferred method of ordering uniforms. If items are required to be tried on, then an appointment should be made by contacting the Primary Admin on 9621 3500. We are continuing to limit numbers in the Uniform Shop so an appointment is preferred. Please note we can not accept email or telephone orders.
Bookings can be made by phoning the Primary Admin or email Michelle James Michelle.James@cewa.edu.au
Please also keep in mind when ordering, that your items will go home Tuesday and Friday of each week, as Monday and Thursday are the days the Shop is open. When placing an order via the Online Shop, it will appear on a report the following day. For example; if you place your order on Monday, the report issues on Tuesday which means it will not be organised until Thursday, and will go home on Friday.
