Dear Lord,
We ask you to bless St Joseph's School Community.
We pray that you guide us to be just and to see,
listen, speak and act like St Joseph.
May we be inspired by our Founders to be the best
that we can be.
May we always keep Jesus at the centre of all we do.
St Emilie Pray for us
St Marcellin Pray for us
St Joseph Pray for us
And may we always remember to pray for one another.
AMEN
Dear Members of St Joseph's Community
As we prepare to celebrate Easter, we remember that it is a significant and holy event for Christians around the world, regardless of denomination. It commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which Christians believe is the central event in the Christian faith. The importance of Easter lies in the fact that it represents the core of the Christian faith. Christians believe that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, they can have eternal life and forgiveness for their sins. It is a time to reflect on the life and teachings of Jesus, and the love and mercy He showed to all people.
Easter is also a time of celebration and renewal. It is a time to gather with family and friends, to reinforce the sense of community and fellowship that are important to us.

Senior Secondary Ball
Two weeks ago, Years 11 and 12 students dressed up for the evening and danced the night away at their School Ball. It was a wonderful evening - the students looked magnificent, their behaviour was outstanding and it was great fun! Special thanks must go to Nicki Parker as the event organiser for all that she did to make it all come together. Thanks also to the parents who helped decorate, the staff who attended and to Angie Roe for her photography skills.
Holidays
At the end of what has been a busy term, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on all that has been accomplished over the past few months for our students. Whether it was mastering a new skill, making new friends, or simply persevering through challenging coursework, each student has achieved something significant this term. As we prepare to take a break and recharge for the next term, let’s celebrate our accomplishments and look ahead to the possibilities that await us in the coming terms.
Wishing you all a happy and holy Easter and I hope you manage a break of some kind over the holiday period. We look forward to seeing students back on Wednesday 26 April.

Weekly Gospel Reflection
Please view the Gospel reflection for this week.
This week's clip has a focus on 'Christ as the Resurrection'
Stations of the Cross
On Monday, both campuses took part in a unique remembrance Liturgy of the 'Stations of the Cross.'
Our Secondary Liturgy was held with Homerooms as our Ministry Leaders and School Captains talked through each station accompanied by visuals on the projector screens. All staff and students were encouraged to respond to the visuals and individual stations in comparison to times they had felt like characters in the Crucifixion story. Students also reflected throughout the Liturgy on loved ones who have passed away and placed a commemorative stone at the foot of the Cross in the Quad once the Liturgy had been completed.
On the Primary Campus, some of our Year 6's acted out each station for all classes. The whole congregation of students and staff walked around the school grounds at each station following the character of Jesus as if we too were walking in the Footsteps of Christ.
Students were encouraged to respond to prompts at each station reflecting on times they have felt like Jesus did.

Dear Families & Friends,
It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of Term 1. This week, students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 participated in Stations of the Cross as part of Holy Week. Thank you to Mr Reidy and our Year 6 students for leading us in such a reverent prayer service.

Class in Focus: Year 1 Blue
It has been a great Term for Year 1 Blue who have settled in beautifully to Year 1 life. We can’t believe how fast this term has flown by! In Year 1 Blue, we have been focusing on narrative writing with the book, "The Gruffalo", and we have even had a go at coming up with, and writing our own narrative stories.
In Religion we have been learning all about Lent and how important the lead up to Easter is. We have learnt that Jesus carried out actions showing love and service to others and what special things we can do during Lent. We have also learnt that Easter is a time of great joy and peace.
In Mathematics Year 1 Blue have been learning basic addition and subtraction sums, 2D and 3D shapes, as well as trying to read and write our numbers up to 100. We have been loving the counting to 120 song, which we love to sing and dance, while we count aloud.
In History we have been learning all about the past and present. We even made our own butter the old-fashioned way by shaking cream in a jar until it became butter. It was delicious, although we noted it would be very tiring to do it every day!
We were also very lucky this term to partake in the colour run. We had lots of fun with a slip and slide and run around in the foam pit. We were all saturated with water but came out looking like rainbows. Miss Hobbs was incredibly proud that everyone participated and had fun!
Although it is only the first term of the year, we are looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year has in store for us.

What a busy term we have had. We hand your children back exhausted and ready for a break. Thank you to the P&F for an amazing Colour Run. I have been informed that we raised $15 436 and that the winner of the pizza lunch was Marcellin 3. Well done everyone!
On Monday, Capt. Nathan Lee from Australian Defence Force Recruiting presented to students from Years 10 to 12 making us aware of the vast choice of jobs that can be found in the Defence Forces. Students can gain highly sought-after skills, nationally recognised qualifications, learn a trade, earn a tertiary qualification and get paid to do it all. There are hundreds of different roles and endless career paths you can choose from during your career in the ADF.
On Wednesday, students in Years 10 to 12 went to the RAC Arena for the RAC Bstreetsmart Event as part of their Keys for Life training. The RAC Bstreetsmart Event has been running since 2012. The event aims to demonstrate the consequences of distracted driving, speeding and drink and drug driving. The event includes a crash re-enactment, interactive activities and guest speakers from the Australian Police force, Fire Services, Paramedics and victims of road accidents. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to learn more about road safety and the consequences of poor decisions while driving. This was an excellent opportunity for our students to get a well-rounded perspective on why traffic rules exist and the irreversible consequences of ignoring them.

St Joseph's Senior School Ball
The ballroom was decorated, the hair and nails were set, the button-hole flowers were ready… it was the night of the St Joseph’s Senior School Ball!
The Years 11 and 12 students looked glamorous and mature as they arrived at Bernard Park for photos at 5pm. Some arrived in old cars, one on a motorbike and even a shiny orange Mack truck. Photos commenced by the very capable Angie Roe of Angie Roe Photography. There was some light rain which did not dampen spirits. When it got a bit heavier, photos moved to the sound shell for a short while. Luckily, the sky cleared for some group photos at the park and then there was a beautiful golden light while students moved from the park to the ball venue, the Northam Country Club.
As students arrived at the ball, Mr Vogel and Mr Matthys opened car doors and they were welcomed by Mrs Woodgate. They joined their peers on the verandah for mocktails and finger food as the sun set over the tree tops. The mocktails were kindly provided by Mrs Rose Power and her helpers Mrs Raelene Ashman and Megan Ashman. Mrs Power represents Road Safety and Drug Education Branch, of the Department of Education. We owe her a great deal of thanks for making this part of the ball so special.
The Country Club had prepared a feast for the students, chicken caccitorre, lasagne, Italian rice, roast vegetables, vegetarian quiche and salad was served as the main meal. Year 10 Helpers were wonderful in assisting handing out food, collecting plates and serving desert. Thanks to Jesica Tony, Josna Jojo, Georgie Hammarquist, Patricia Moyo and Nathan Collins for their excellent service. Between main meal and dessert, students experienced the ‘formalities’ of a ball as M.C., Mr Reidy, lead them in a toast to their parents and to absent friends, as well as some official thanks. The chocolate mousse cake followed and was well received.
Once the dinner was done, DJ Daniel Vernede cranked the music and students hit the dance floor. There was also photo booth fun and craziness as students had fun posing with their friends and partners, making use of the array of props. Mr Vernede kept the music pumping right to the end and students happily departed at 10.30pm with sore feet but lots of smiles.
Special thanks to our parent helpers who assisted in setting up on Friday March 24: Theresa Ochtman, Jenny Abbott, Maria Matres, and Ms Lombardini for her amazing decorating skills! Thanks to all staff helpers who gave up their night to assist and supervise. Special thanks to the Northam Country Club who are just amazing in their support and catering services - the food and the venue were excellent.
The professional photos by Angie Roe Photography have now been made available to students via Teams, as well as the photo booth shots by Adept Photography. Thanks to these great services. Thanks to the office ladies for handling the administration of ball tickets and especially to Mrs Spadaccini for the beautiful ball tickets and place name cards on the tables.
Lastly, thanks must go the Student Ball Committee and the students themselves, who made the 2023 Senior School Ball so successful. You looked wonderful and you were a credit to your parents and the school.
Upcoming Tertiary events
Some events for students looking at a university pathway or currently completing ATAR or alternative tertiary entrance programs, are the upcoming University Open Days.
These days are an opportunity to attend course presentations, speak with staff and current students, check out facilities and collect materials on the range of degrees on offer at that university and is well worth the effort, especially for our Years 10 to 12 students.
The following events with links are-
Saturday 29 April from 10:00am to 3:00pm - University of Notre Dame Australia.
Sunday 30 April - Edith Cowan University (Mt Lawley); https://www.ecu.edu.au/open-day/
In addition to these Open Days, Edith Cowan University at Joondalup have organised a few upcoming evenings to showcase their Engineering faculty. The dates are Wednesday 26 April, Thursday 8 June and Friday 8 September, running from 4.30 pm until 6.30pm and are repeat sessions. Year 12 students are encouraged to attend either of the first two, if this is an interest area for you, as this will coincide with your university application process. In addition to facilities tours and demonstration of laboratory work, they will also present materials about industry connections and available scholarships. Additional details can be obtained through email at; seadmin@ecu.edu.au
With a lot of opportunities on offer about courses and careers, now is the time to consider this, take charge and attend a few sessions. You may even discover a new course that will take you on an exciting future career pathway.
Rural Clinical School of WA Visit
Last Wednesday, the Rural Clinical of WA (RCSWA) were invited to discuss and promote courses and careers in medicine and dentistry. With three different universities in WA now offering these programs and a push to promote the regions to health professionals, there are many possibilities for interested students. Years 11 and 12 students sat through a presentation that provided an overview of courses and selection processes including the university clinical aptitude test and the medical interview procedure.
Immediately following on from this, the Year 10A students also listened to a brief presentation, outlining required marks and pre-requisite subjects to consider for senior secondary, along with a series of practical activities. These were not only a great learning experience, but a lot of fun. As time goes by, hopefully we will be adding a few more St Joseph’s School alumni to the ranks of university medical students. On behalf of all our groups involved, I would like to thank the RCSWA team for providing this opportunity for our students.

Food Science
This week, the Year 11 Food Science and Technology Students created a signature dish using “local foods” as part of their study of The Buy West Eat Best campaign. They did an amazing job with some of the dishes on the menu of the following -
Apple donuts, Apple Pie, Apple Strudel and Pear Crumble
The savoury dishes were Beef with a mushroom sauce, Beef with a Garlic Sauce, Mexican Chicken Parmigiana and Pork Gyoza.
The students were judged by Year 12 Food Science and Technology students and staff and rated out of 30 points each.
Congratulations to Sienna Glavas-Medcraft and Tegan Ward who took out the Savoury Prize with their delicious Pork Gyozas and Antoinette Matres and Madeleine Gilbert Hancock who won the sweet award with their Pear Crumble.

10A Science Rocket Launch
On Tuesday 4 April, the 10A Science class ventured out to Burlong Farm in the hopes of sending their handmade rockets into the stratosphere. This was the culmination of their work for Term 1, constructing model rockets and learning about things that were quite literally ‘rocket science.’ Students took charge ensuring everything was safe for launch, following proper launch procedures and including waiting for a helicopter to pass so as not to scare the pilot with mini missiles whistling past.
All students managed to get their rockets up at least twice, in between a handful of non-launches. A few lucky groups were lucky enough to still have an intact rocket near the end, to use the more powerful motor and see how far they could push their rockets in hopes of a longer flight time.
A big thanks is extendended to Mr Gargano and Mrs Budas for all the work they put in organising and making sure that the day ran smoothly. Also, a huge thank you to Justin and Annette Fox for letting us launch projectiles on their farm once again, there are a few more MIA rockets to add to your collection.

Secondary da Vinci Club
The Secondary da Vinci Club have been busy spending the second half of Term 1 training for next Term’s da Vinci Decathlon, the annual interschool academic challenge held at the University of WA. The Years 8 to 10 students are developing team dynamics by delving into the processes and practice tasks from previous years for challenges in science, code breaking, mathematics, engineering and ideation and tackling these using the skills and strengths of each group member. Each year, the state event has a theme, this year it is ‘Unity’.
Each challenge has a different approach and may rely upon creating a model, solving mathematical puzzles, identifying errors, and improving results from experimental data or a goal focussed proposal to solve a particular issue. Each task relies upon content knowledge and then applying this to a contextual situation using problem solving and creativity. Points are awarded for each of the 10 challenges, with the final positions calculated from the accumulated points throughout the day for the 25 teams in each year group.
With a few weeks of preparation remaining, we look forward to bringing you exciting updates after this year’s event in May.

From the VET Office
Congratulations to Quinn McEwan-Robertson for the completion of her Certificate IV Preparation for Health and Nursing.
Quinn has now committed to a School-Based traineeship for the remainder of her Year 12 schooling. A Certificate IV Preparation for Health Nursing can be used for University entrance. Murdoch University accepts a Certificate IV with a General English pass, while Curtin University requires an additional Special Tertiary Admissions Test for entry. Quinn hasn’t decided which pathway to follow yet, but with a variety of qualifications, she has plenty of choice and her future looks bright. Well done, Quinn.

Families have the ability to work off a portion of their fees through voluntary help at the School. This is a great way to get involved and set a wonderful example of vollunteering for your child.
Whilst assisting in the Canteen is an obvious way to help, other activities encouraged include:
- Classroom assistance
- Reading assistance
- Officiating at swimming & athletics carnivals
- Gardening
- Running or assisting with fundraising activities
- Covering books for the Library
Forms and pamphlets are available from the Primary Office or download through the website at https://sjsnortham.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/86/parent_participation_card.pdf
Once completed, please hand in to the Business Manager, Ms Quinn, by the end of Term 3 - the forms can be dropped into either Admin Office and Ms Quinn will arrange for the deduction of the Levy from your School Fees Account.

Canteen Support - Volunteers Required
Due to high demand on our quality food and service we need helpers to ensure that our kids get their lunches on time. In order to function to our highest potential, we ideally need 2 or more volunteers a day. Volunteering is a great way to teach your kids about giving, modelling them for the future. Also, every shift you do at our School helps you towards qualifying for a Parent Participation discount on your annual fees. We would like to give a big thank you to all the helpers this term, the Year 6's have done a great job volunteering for magic hours in the canteen and it has been great to see dads helping out on the BBQ too!
We would love to welcome you into our fun, and busy environment and see the smiles on your children’s faces when they see you in their school. Our Online sign-up portal for Term 2 canteen volunteers will be advertised closer to the start of next term.
I look forward to working with you. If you have any queries, you are always welcome to contact the Canteen on the number below.
Have a happy & holy Easter and enjoy the 2 week break. We look forward to seeing you in Term 2.
