Dear Members of St Joseph's Community
I cannot explain how happy my heart was last Friday when our whole school came together for an afternoon of fun at the Colour Run. There was such a great vibe as the sound of laughter and squeals filled the air. I would like to extend a huge vote of thanks to the many, many volunteers who made the day possible – whether you were involved in the lead up, initial set-up, the feeding of the volunteers or helping at the actual event, none of it would have been possible without your generous donation of time. We are truly grateful to have such a wonderful and committed community. To date our fundraising total (from online donations only so far) is up to $14,286 – Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Senior Secondary Ball
The excitement of our senior students reached fever pitch today as they eagerly await their Senior Secondary Ball tonight . I am looking forward to celebrating with them all this evening. We will highlight all the glitz and glamour in the next newsletter.

Fifth Week of Lent
(Week beginning Monday 27 March)
Project Compassion brings together Australian schools, parishes and supporters to raise funds for people in vulnerable communities across the world. This year, we introduced you to the story of four inspiring people whose lives have been transformed with your generous support: Laxmi, Tereesa, Priscilla and Thu.
Today, they are creating a better world for their families, their communities and for all future generations.
Project Compassion is a demonstration of the faith, empathy and generosity of our supporters. It is the lifeblood of Caritas Australia – without it, we could not do the vital work we do. Thank you for helping transform lives today and for all future generations.
Holy Week
(Week beginning Monday 3rd April)
As we enter Holy Week, we continue to reflect on the lives of people vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice and how we can respond through supporting Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion appeal.
Your generosity is the pebble that allows Caritas Australia to create the ripples that will improve the livelihoods of vulnerable communities, supporting them to flourish and create opportunities for future generations to live to their full potential.
Thank you!
Please return all Project Compassion boxes and envelopes to the school office by Friday 26th May or donate online via the Caritas Australia website at www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion

Dear Families & Friends,
This week, our Year 6 students attended Camp at Woodman Point, Coogee. Our happy campers had an amazing time ziplining, bike riding, rafting, rock climbing and spending quality time at the beach with their friends.
Thank you to Mr Watson, Miss D’Silva, Mr Ewing and Mrs James for looking after our students so well on Camp. Thank you also to our Year 6 students for their exemplary behaviour, kindness to each other and for giving everything a go! It was a pleasure to attend Camp with you.
May you all have a lovely week ahead.

Class in Focus: Kindy Gold
The Kindy Gold year began with lots of bright and eager faces entering the classroom. Yes, there were a few tears, but they were soon forgotten when we discovered all the fun things that we could do at school. We enjoyed exploring the indoor and outdoor environment and playing with all the toys.
Term One in Kindy has been all about getting to know each other and how our bodies work. To do this we have looked at what our bodies can do and how we move them. We made hand and footprints and discussed why God made us special. We also have been exploring the five senses and have done lots of fun activities.
Sight: We talked all about our eyes and made a Litany of thanks to God for all the things we could see. We made cool telescopes using cylinders and cellophane.
Hearing: We played 'guess this sound' and learnt about our ears. We made shakers using paper plates with rice in them. They made a cool noise.
Touch: This was probably the most fun. We got to explore slime, shaving cream and made a finger painting. We even made a cool painting that puffed up when you cooked it in the microwave!
Smell: Our nose is really cool. We use it to smell things. We played a game where we had to guess what was in the cup using our nose. Some smells were nice, and others were yucky! We painted some flowers and made them smell by adding jelly crystals. We had some crystals left over so we made jelly. Some smelled like blueberries and the other like strawberries.

Upcoming Tertiary events
Some upcoming events for students looking at a university pathway or currently completing ATAR or alternative tertiary entrance programs, are the upcoming University Open Days.
These days are an opportunity to attend course presentations, speak with staff and current students, check out facilities and collect materials on the range of degrees on offer at that university and is well worth the effort, especially for our Years 10 to 12 students.
The following events with links are-
Sunday 26 March from 10:00am to 3:00pm - Curtin University Open day;.
https://www.curtin.edu.au/open-day/
Sunday 02 April - Edith Cowan University (Joondalup); https://www.ecu.edu.au/open-day/
Sunday 02 April - Murdoch University; https://www.murdoch.edu.au/study/open-day
Saturday 29 April from 10:00am to 3:00pm - University of Notre Dame Australia.
Sunday 30 April - Edith Cowan University (Mt Lawley); https://www.ecu.edu.au/open-day/
In addition to these Open Days, Edith Cowan University at Joondalup have organised a few upcoming evenings to showcase their Engineering faculty. The dates are Wednesday 26 April, Thursday 8 June and Friday 8 September, running from 4.30 pm until 6.30pm and are repeat sessions. Year 12 students are encouraged to attend either of the first two, if this is an interest area for you, as this will coincide with your university application process. In addition to facilities tours and demonstration of laboratory work, they will also present materials about industry connections and available scholarships. Additional details can be obtained through email at; seadmin@ecu.edu.au
With a lot of opportunities on offer about courses and careers, now is the time to consider this, take charge and attend a few sessions. You may even discover a new course that will take you on an exciting future career pathway.
ICRAR Science Incursion
On Tuesday 14 March, the Years 11 and 12 Physics students and Year 10A Science students investigated a range of areas linked with astronomy with staff from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR).
Students had a practical session on the oval where they were instructed how to construct a telescope and then completed the activity. Students then aligned the telescope and (using the solar filter) conducted observations of our Sun.
The indoor activity involved examining data from a distant galaxy, NGC 7531. Using some light images, the students identified the rotational velocity of the galaxy, then examined astronomical images at its radius. From here, using some formula work from Newton’s law of universal gravitation, combined with the circular motion formula, the students calculated the mass of the galaxy - not bad for something which is 70 million light years from the Earth!
After the practical and analysis sections, the students listened to a 30 minute presentation about ICRAR and astronomical research being conducted here in WA, which includes the development of the largest telescope project in the world, the Square Kilometre Array. In addition to this, the students heard about exoplanet discoveries and the search for life, this certainly generated some interesting discussions.
On behalf of our students, I thank Leah and Melissa from ICRAR for providing this curriculum-linked event to enhance our learning. With the diverse physics research and international centres in astronomy established now in WA, a great opportunity for interested students to consider a future pathway with a large number of jobs in science, technology and engineering on offer.

Food Science
The Year 9 Food Science students have been working on a task focusing on food styling and presentation. This assessment required them to produce a canape using one main colour – “Eating the Rainbow”. This is a healthy, balanced way of meal planning. The students did a fabulous job and enjoyed trying everyone else's canapes.

Technologies
Workshop has started off the year in top gear!
Year 7s have started by making a keyring out of 6mm M.D.F. They had to draw a design and then cut it out using a coping saw before painting. Their second project is under way with the students marking out and cutting a piece of pine to make a pot stand (teapot, saucepan, or plant pot). This will see them using a tenon saw, marking gauge, hand plane, chisel and drill.
Year 8s have been busy drawing designs for a cutting board and then gluing pieces of Pine, Jarrah and Tasmanian Oak together before transferring their design and then cutting out. The Year 8s are making some very creative designs.
Year 9s have been designing and drawing plans for a tool caddy made from plywood. The designs are individual and very well put together, being something that they can use for many years to come.
Year 10s have been drawing the plans for a hall stand. Even though they are using the same plan, the tops of the table will be different for each student. The legs will be made from Jarrah and will be shaped. Students are learning to make mortise and tenon joints and the results are great.
The Years 9/10 STEM class have been completing a project called ‘Tinkering with Tops’ and have made spinning tops with CD’s and materials that are available in the house. They have moved onto designing and making solid wooden spinning tops using lathes.
Year 12s are busy making bookshelves of various designs. They have started by designing and drawing their plans before moving onto the production phase. The students have also completed a theory task looking at the use of manufactured wood products and their use in the building and furniture industries.

Cookie Central
This term is the third year of Cookie Central selling yummy, delicious freshly baked cookies once a week at recess.
The students have been mastering their shopping and baking skills to provide a variety of cookies and milo balls, which they sell for 50cents each.
The money from selling these cookies goes back into buying more ingredients and equipment needed to run their enterprise program, even creating their own branded aprons. Our students also donate part of their profits to charity, with previous years giving donations to the St Joseph’s Christmas tree appeal and the hamper drive.
This year has been a great start to Cookie Central, the students have baked and sold 655 cookies! This week the students added up all the silver coins and it was a total of $100. They have chosen to donate this money to the School's current Project Compassion collection for Caritas.
Mr Reidy came down to The Hub to collect the money but had to go and get a trolley to carry the very heavy $100 of silver coins away!
Thank you to all who buy cookies each week and if you are yet to try them, come and buy a delicious 50 cent cookie on Friday at recess from the canteen. Please note - Cash only sales.

Secondary ASDN
The Years 10 to 12 students who are working on their ASDAN Work Awareness program are learning about all the different kinds of jobs people do. This week Mrs Marriott came to class appropriately smudged to teach the students about dirty jobs. Cooper said he would never consider doing a job that required you to get dirty, but Santi said he would do a dirty job because you can earn more money and you can always get clean at the end of the day.

Slazenger Cup
On Thursday 16 March, Chelsea Harries, Antoinette Matres and Sinead Fergusson attended the Slazenger Tennis Cup and Mount Lawley Tennis Club.
The girls had a really good day although the start was challenging. The first two sessions against John Forrest and Applecross were really tough for the girls - their players have very fast serves and hard hitting returns, making for some challenging matches. During the first doubles against John Forrest, the girls were down 1-7 but managed to get it to 7-11 which was an awesome effort. We played the remaining teams (St Hilda's, Swan Christian and Guildford Grammar) and were able to have couple of wins in both singles and doubles.
Our girls conducted themselves in a wonderful, friendly, country manner, chatting with some of the other girls who showed the same friendliness and tennis etiquette. The event was really well run and the schedule ran like clockwork. Thank you very much to Mrs Goddard for taking the team to this competition.
ACC Swimming Carnival
The ACC Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday 16 March at Mt Claremont. All students performed well with outstanding results below for individuals and the team.
Team Results:
Overall school 3rd place
Junior Girls 1st place
Senior Girls 4th place
Senior Boys 5th place
Overall Girls 1st place
Overall Boys 5th place
Individual results:
U13 Girls - Alexie Wallis 5th place
U14 Girls - Cherry Chiteak 1st place
U15 Boys - Kai Harries 1st Place

Colour Run Success
Last Friday we held our Colour Run! It was a fabulous day and all the students had a great time at what was a very successful event.
Events like this cannot happen without the support and help from parents, caregivers and local businesses. I would like to thank the below people and businesses for their contributions by not only donating but also helping behind the scenes to make this event happen!
Firstly to Lauren Holten who was a huge help getting everything sorted behind the scenes; Rebecca Potocznyj and her team of helpers in getting the colour mixed and sorted; Yvette Boyland, Angela Sandrini, Kate and Mike Morgan, Leah and Cam Smith, Jo Smith, the Shire of Northam, Bunnings Northam, Northam Volunteer Fire Brigade and local Police Officers. Also a massive thank you to all the volunteers who helped set up, pack down and volunteered their time during the day to help the event run smoothly!

Once again, we will be holding an Easter Raffle. We are asking parents and caregivers to please donate Easter related items for the prizes. Tickets will be sold before school and during lunch time. Donations are accepted at both Admin Offices.
Class Catch Ups
Throughout Term One and Term Two, class reps from each year will be organising class catch ups for individual year groups. This is a great way for new families to meet other parents in their child’s year group. Each year group will be notified of these events through their Facebook group pages.
Next P&F Meeting
Our next P&F meeting will be held on Monday 27 March at 3.20pm (location to be confirmed). All parents and caregivers are welcome and we encourage everyone to come along and see how you can help out!

Canteen Assistance
A reminder about Canteen assistance - if parents have an hour to spare after dropping off their kids, or between 11.30am and 12.50pm, Angela would appreciate any help you can offer her. The number of lunch orders coming in is the highest it's ever been, which means more food to get ready. You can also have these volunteer hours marked off on your Parent Participation Card, which deducts $100.00 from your school fees. Your kids will also love seeing their parents at School!

For those with telescopes or high-powered binoculars, the Shoe-Buckle Star cluster can be seen above Mars, and the January Salt-and-Pepper Star Cluster can be seen below the Moon.
When to look: 7.00pm to 9.30pm, 28 March.
Which direction to look: In the western sky.
Something Interesting: Star clusters are lovely astronomical objects to view, often distinguishable with special shapes and patterns. The Shoe-Buckle Cluster is an open cluster located in the constellation Gemini. The cluster is approximately 2,800 light-years away from Earth and contains approximately 200 stars.
