Year 1 Blue’s Planet Earth Project
In HASS this term, Year 1 Blue have started learning all about Planet Earth. We’ve been discovering that the Earth is split into two halves, the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. We have learned about the invisible equator that goes around the middle. One of the students explained it perfectly, saying “It’s like a belt that holds the hemispheres together!”
We were also surprised to find out that penguins mostly live in the Southern Hemisphere, and polar bears in the Northern. This sparked lots of great questions and wonderings about what else we might find in different parts of the world.
We’ve now started creating our very own papier-mâché globe. So far, we’ve painted it blue and are excited to start adding the equator, the poles, and some continents as we continue our learning.
It’s been fantastic to see the students so engaged, asking thoughtful questions, and working together along the way.
Year 1 Gold: Designing a Zoo & 'Rain in a Jar'
This term students have been learning about the world map and creating their own papier-mâché globe which has been a well liked project in Year 1 Gold. This has linked in with our Mathematics content this term where student have been locating objects on given maps and creating a map of what their zoo would look like if they owned a zoo. This got Year 1’s excited for the upcoming excursion to the Perth Zoo in Week 9.
In science this term we have been learning about weather and did an experiment called 'Rain in a Jar' which explains how clouds hold water until they become too heavy and create rain. Year 1 Gold students are looking forward to ending Term 2 with fun-filled Founders Week activities.
