On the Secondary Campus

Maths Department

The Year 7 students have made a strong start in mathematics, with many misconceptions already fading. They are beginning to recognise how maths plays a role in everyday life, from sharing food to shopping. Teachers have successfully connected these daily experiences to mathematical principles, sparking both interest and enthusiasm. So far, students have worked with whole numbers, applying associative, commutative, and distributive laws to improve their mental and written calculations. They've also explored number properties and patterns to deepen their understanding of both linear and non-linear relationships.

In Year 10 Course C, students have focused on strengthening their number skills with integers and decimals, while Financial Mathematics has been a key area of study. They are currently applying Pythagoras’ Theorem to real-world construction scenarios, giving them practical insight into its use.

Year 11 Applications students have been studying Applied Percentages and Financial Mathematics, covering topics such as GST, sales, taxation, commission, shares, and government allowances. Many of these calculations are completed without a calculator, and students are encouraged to share their methods with the class to further reinforce their learning.

In Year 11 Mathematics Methods, students have explored the language of sets and notations for events and probabilities, with a focus on conditional probability. This has led to a deeper understanding of the proofs behind key formulas. They’ve also revisited functions and relations, which has paved the way for exploring the quadratic formula and the process of completing the square.

Year 11 Essential Mathematics students recently completed their first test, which focused on basic calculations such as rates and percentages. Many performed well, demonstrating a solid foundation for advancing their mathematical understanding. The class is now revising key concepts like perimeter, area, and volume in preparation for their first Investigation, which will be completed in Week 10.

Year 12 Methods students have been studying differentiation in calculus and are now applying this knowledge to model the motion of the new Adventure World ride, Inferno Two. The ride is designed to offer multiple distinct experiences for the rider, and students presented their proposal as a report to convince the engineering department that their design was the best option.
